Elderly Woman Picking Malunggay Gets Injured After Being Pierced by Iron Fence
An elderly woman had to undergo surgery after a frightening accident while picking moringa leaves in Novaliches, Quezon City.
On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, a 60-year-old grandmother was gathering moringa leaves from a nearby yard in Barangay San Agustin when she suddenly felt dizzy. She lost her balance and slipped, causing her jaw to be pierced by a sharp iron fence.
The accident left her trapped in place and unable to move, prompting residents to immediately call for help.
Emergency medical responders from the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office quickly arrived at the scene, along with personnel from the Quezon City Fire Department.
To prevent further injury, they carefully covered the woman’s face with bandages and made sure she remained calm and stable while they planned the rescue.
Rescue workers explained that the iron could not be pulled out right away because it might cause more damage. Using a hydraulic cutter, the special rescue team slowly cut the metal fence instead.
The operation was done with extreme care to avoid worsening her condition. After around 30 minutes, they were finally able to free the woman from the fence.
The grandma was then rushed to the hospital, where doctors performed surgery to safely remove the iron that had pierced her jaw and passed through her mouth. Medical staff confirmed that despite the severity of the injury, no vital organs were hit.
The woman is now in stable condition and recovering after the operation. Authorities reminded the public, especially senior citizens, to take extra care when doing outdoor tasks. Even familiar activities can become dangerous when accidents happen, and quick response from both neighbors and rescue teams can make a life-saving difference.
