Authorities Arrest Helmet Thief After Delivery Rider Fights Back
A helmet thief and his two colleagues were arrested after a delivery rider fights back in Barangay North Fairview, Quezon City.
Last week, three men were arrested after stealing the helmet of a delivery rider outside a fast-food chain along Dollar Street in Quezon City. The theft quickly turned into an intense chase that ended with all suspects in police custody.
The incident started when the delivery rider came out of the restaurant and noticed that his helmet was missing. He immediately went to the barangay with his brother to check the CCTV footage. The video showed one man casually walking away while carrying the stolen helmet.
The rider searched the nearby area using his brother’s helmet. Not long after, he spotted the suspect riding a motorized tricycle along with two companions. This led to a chase that stretched through Atherton Bridge and Drachma Tulyahan Street.
The pursuit ended when the tricycle slowed down at a curved part of the road. Two of the men jumped off and tried to escape on foot. The rider did not give up and chased the man who took his helmet, eventually hitting him with his motorcycle to stop him from running away.
Police officers who responded to the scene immediately arrested all three suspects. The tricycle driver was cleared after authorities confirmed that he had no idea about the crime.
Investigators later found out that the main suspect had been jailed before for theft and was known for stealing motorcycles in Bulacan. He admitted to taking the helmet, saying he needed money for personal reasons.
“Ayon din sa ating imbestigasyon, ang isa sa ating mga suspek ay talamak na magnanakaw ng motorsiklo sa Bulacan. Isang grupo lang sila at ‘yun nga ang kanilang modus,”
Fairview Police Station commander PLt. Col. Roldante Sarmiento said.
The other two men denied any involvement and claimed they were unaware of the theft. The suspects are now detained at the Fairview Police Station and are facing theft charges.
“Inosente talaga kami, lalo na ako. Kaya lang naman ako napunta sa lugar na ‘yun dahil gusto ko lang din magka-extra money,”
one of the suspects said.
Police also reminded motorists to always secure their helmets and belongings to avoid becoming victims of similar crimes.
