Pinay OFW in Critical but Stable Condition After Risking Her Life to Save Employer’s Baby
A Pinay OFW is being hailed as a hero in Hong Kong after saving the three-month-old baby under her care during a huge fire in Tai Po District.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) confirmed that 29-year-old Rhodora “Jackie” Alcaraz, a newly arrived domestic worker, is in critical but stable condition in the hospital.
The fire broke out on November 26 at Wang Fuk Court, filling the building with thick smoke. Instead of escaping alone, Alcaraz chose to shield the baby and carry the child out of danger.
The young Filipino nanny held the infant tightly as they waited for rescuers, enduring the smoke that eventually caused her to collapse. Both she and the baby were brought out safely, along with the child’s mother.
Alcaraz had only been in Hong Kong for one day when the tragedy occurred. Her family in San Pablo City, Laguna, learned about her condition through relatives abroad, as they had yet to receive complete updates from her agency or OWWA.
Local OWWA representatives visited the family and provided food assistance, but the siblings appealed for more direct help, particularly for one of them to travel to Hong Kong so Alcaraz would have someone by her side as she recovers.
OWWA officials in Hong Kong, along with representatives from the Philippine Consulate and Migrant Workers Office, have already visited Alcaraz to express the government’s support.
“Marami ang humanga sa kaniyang kabayanihan, isang tunay na modern-day hero at huwaran ng malasakit at tapang ng Pilipino sa ibang bayan,”
OWWA said.
The fire claimed over a hundred lives, with more than 200 reported missing. Thirteen Filipinos remain unaccounted for, and another OFW, Maryan Pascual Esteban, was confirmed to have died in the incident.
