DOLE Urges Employers to Strengthen Workplace Safety Program
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is urging employers to strengthen the workplace safety program.
The Labor Department has introduced a stronger push for workplace safety as the country continues to face various disruptive events ranging from natural disasters to unexpected emergencies.
The agency is directing employers to put in place a more detailed and reliable safety program that protects workers and keeps workplaces prepared.
Under Labor Advisory No. 15, issued on November 15, companies are now required to develop a structured safety plan. Thie plan should outline how workplaces will secure their facilities through proper engineering measures, ensure essential utilities are protected, and prepare procedures for different emergency situations.
Aside from structural safeguards, the advisory also emphasizes the need for clear administrative systems, including evacuation plans and communication channels that workers can depend on during urgent situations.
The advisory also emphasizes the importance of providing personal protective equipment to help employees move safely and respond effectively when emergencies occur.
Employers are urged to temporarily halt operations if they identify any immediate threat and instead consider flexible work setups so workers can stay safe without compromising their livelihood.
DOLE added that importaservice providers and critical establishments must keep a minimum number of staff available during crises to ensure continuous operation. While the “no work, no pay” rule applies to suspended workdays, companies may choose to give more favorable arrangements based on their internal policies or agreements.
