ICU Patient at OLM Hospital Dies in Bulacan Fire
An ICU patient died after a fire broke out at Our Lady of Mercy General Hospital in Barangay Lungos, Pulilan, Bulacan.
On Monday (December 8, 2025), the fire took the life of a patient, causing fear and panic inside the hospital. The fire started shortly after 1 a.m. and quickly spread thick smoke throughout the building, reaching as high as the Intensive Care Unit.
The victim was a patient confined in the ICU who died after inhaling a large amount of smoke. Because ICU patients are often unable to move on their own, rescuers faced serious challenges during the evacuation.
Despite the difficult conditions, firefighters and rescue teams worked tirelessly to save lives as the fire escalated to the third alarm.
Seventeen other patients were safely rescued from different parts of the hospital. Many of them had to be carefully carried out as visibility inside the building was poor due to heavy smoke and narrow hallways.
After being rescued, the patients were immediately checked by medical teams to make sure they were stable and safe from further harm.
Firefighters acted quickly to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading further. Their quick response helped avoid a higher number of casualties, especially considering that the incident happened while most patients were sleeping.
Initial findings from the Bureau of Fire Protection showed that the fire may have started at the back of a refrigerator located inside the hospital pharmacy. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and to find out if there were safety lapses or equipment issues that contributed to the incident.
Local authorities are now urging hospitals and other institutions to review their fire safety measures to better protect lives and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
