Cardinal Jose Advincula opened the traditional Misa de Aguinaldo Mass at Manila Cathedral on Tuesday, Dec. 16, urging Catholics to embrace inclusion as Christmas preparations began.

In his homily, Advincula said Simbang Gabi is not reserved for the devout but welcomes everyone seeking faith, healing or a renewed relationship with God.

“Lahat kasali dito. Everyone has a place here,” Advincula said, repeating his message that the Church must remain open to all people during the Mass.

The cardinal said the nine days reflect the nine months Mary carried Jesus, inviting the faithful to walk with her and prepare their hearts for Christ.

He welcomed first-time attendees, returning Catholics and those burdened by doubts or wounds, saying the Church exists not for the perfect but for all seekers.

“The Church is not meant only for those who feel worthy. It is meant for all who seek the Lord,” Advincula said.

He warned that selective acceptance and judgment create divisions in families, workplaces and parishes, fueling perceptions that the Church excludes ordinary or struggling Filipinos.

“Because of this, many Filipinos stop coming to church. Some think the Church is only for the perfect. Others stay away because they feel judged by those who attend Mass. This should disturb us,” he added.

The Manila archbishop urged the faithful to notice those ignored at school, work or parish life, and to respond with compassion, listening and concrete acts of welcome.

As Simbang Gabi continues, Advincula said the season challenges Catholics to widen their hearts, reflect God’s mercy and build communities that unite rather than divide.

“Let us become a Church that welcomes rather than excludes, that listens rather than judges, that reflects the mercy of Christ,” he said.
