An animal shelter in
Dumaguete, Negros Oriental,
reported that one of its dogs died after suffering a heart attack triggered by fireworks set off on
New Year’s Eve.
Dumaguete Animal Sanctuary
said on Dec. 31, 2025, that the shelter dog,
Noah
, suffered a heart attack and later died from the condition.
According to the sanctuary, fireworks were “being set off constantly around the shelter” prior to the incident.
“We have asked people in the area not to use fireworks near the shelter, but they don’t care,” the sanctuary added.
The sanctuary also assured the public that it had taken all possible measures to make New Year’s Eve as bearable as possible for the animals.
“We have loudspeakers playing music all around. We have all staff in all night, and we have given calming medication to the dogs that we can,” the sanctuary said.
“Poor Noah, it’s such a senseless death. We are so, so sorry this happened to you. Run free, our sweet, sweet boy,” it added.
Fireworks
can be especially frightening for pets, particularly dogs and cats, whose hearing is far more sensitive than humans’. The extreme loudness and unpredictability of the noises make it difficult for them to understand what is happening, triggering their survival instincts to seek safety.
The bright flashes from fireworks can also be perceived as threatening, adding to the stress these events cause for animals.
