University Utility Worker Injured After Being Bitten by Venomous Cobra

A utility worker at a university in Sogod, Southern Leyte was injured after being bitten by a venomous cobra while doing his daily tasks on campus.

The incident caused alarm among university staff and nearby residents, as cobras are considered dangerous snakes.

According to school officials at the Southern Leyte State University Main Campus, the worker was cleaning the grassy area within the university grounds when the snake suddenly struck. The cobra was hidden in the grass, making it difficult to notice the attack.

The worker was immediately given assistance by his co-workers, who acted quickly to ensure his safety.

The injured man was rushed to the Eastern Visayas Medical Center in Tacloban City, the only hospital in Region VIII that has antivenom for cobra bites. Doctors provided immediate treatment, and the worker is now recovering under close medical observation.

The Department of Health advised people to remain calm and seek medical help right away. Victims should go to the nearest hospital as quickly as possible and avoid harmful practices that could worsen the situation.

Health authorities stressed that venom should not be sucked out of the wound. Tying, massaging, or cutting the bitten area is also dangerous and should not be done. Applying herbal medicines or ice packs is strongly discouraged, as these methods do not help and may cause further harm.

Proper maintenance, awareness, and quick response can help prevent similar accidents and protect workers from unexpected dangers in their daily environment.
