Former Mall Security Guard Faces Jail Time for Throwing Puppy From Footbridge in Quezon City
A former mall security guard was jailed and faced a fine for throwing a puppy from a footbridge in Quezon City.
Quezon City Court has sentenced a former mall security guard to jail after finding him guilty of killing a puppy by throwing it from a footbridge in 2023. The decision was released on January 22 and made public on Friday (January 23, 2026).
The court ruled that Jojo Malicdem violated the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, a law that protects animals from abuse and cruelty. He was ordered to serve a prison term of more than one year up to two years.
Malicdem must pay a fine of P100,000. If he fails to pay the amount, he will serve additional time in jail in place of the fine.
The court also directed Malicdem to pay twenty thousand pesos in moral damages to the owner of the puppy, named Browny. This amount will earn a six percent legal interest each year until it is fully paid, adding to his responsibility for the harm he caused.
The incident happened in July 2023 when Malicdem confronted a group of children near a mall. One of the children was carrying Browny. A witness said the guard took the puppy and threw it from a pedestrian footbridge, causing the dog’s immediate death.
May this ruling honor the life that was lost and serve as a warning that ANIMALS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE, and CRUELTY HAS CONSEQUENCES.
