Volunteer Firefighter in Viral QC Supermarket Incident Speaks Out
A volunteer firefighter who was seen taking alcoholic beverages from a burned supermarket in Quezon City has finally spoken to explain his side.
The volunteer, known by the nickname Kwatro, admitted that he was the person seen in the video holding a bottle of alcohol. He explained that his actions were done after receiving a signal from personnel he believed were connected to the Bureau of Fire Protection.
According to him, they were told it was allowed and were reminded to be careful while inside the area.
Kwatro said they would not have entered the burned supermarket or taken anything without being told it was okay. He added that when they arrived, some people who appeared to be higher-ranking responders had already taken items before any volunteers did.
Still, he decided to speak up to clear the situation and to make sure other volunteer firefighters would not be blamed for something they were not part of.
Kwatro stressed that he acted alone and that no other volunteers were involved. He said it was never his intention to cause trouble or damage the reputation of volunteer firefighters who regularly risk their lives to help during emergencies.
The Bureau of Fire Protection is now conducting a formal investigation into the incident. Authorities said that if looting is proven, those involved may face administrative and criminal charges.
