DILG Says Government Vehicles Are Not for School Runs or Vacations
DILG – The Department of the Interior and Local Government has issued a stern warning against the growing misuse of government vehicles for personal activities.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has issued a stern warning to local officials and government employees against the unauthorized use of government-owned vehicles, stressing that these vehicles are not for personal or family use.
The reminder comes amid reports and complaints that some vehicles purchased using public funds are allegedly being used as school service for family members or for outings and other private purposes. The DILG emphasized that such practices are strictly prohibited and constitute a misuse of government resources.

According to the department, government vehicles are acquired to support official duties and public service operations. Their use must always be directly related to the performance of official functions. Any deviation from this mandate undermines public trust and violates existing rules and regulations.
The DILG warned that individuals found illegally using government vehicles may face both administrative and criminal charges. The agency underscored that accountability will be strictly enforced, and erring officials and personnel will be held responsible under the law.
The directive is covered under Memorandum Circular 2026-011, which applies to all levels of local government units, from provincial governments down to barangays. The memorandum also covers agencies under the supervision of the DILG, including the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

By issuing this reminder, the DILG aims to reinforce discipline and integrity within government offices. The department reiterated that public funds are entrusted to officials for the benefit of the people, and any misuse of government property is a serious offense.
The agency also encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any observed misuse of government vehicles. Through stricter monitoring and enforcement, the DILG hopes to ensure that government assets are used properly and exclusively for official and lawful purposes.
Ultimately, the department’s message is clear: government vehicles are for public service, not for family errands, school runs, or leisure trips.
