During a lecture at a university, Tarriela used a caricature of the Chinese leader. Padilla believes it is wrong and does not exhibit respect. According to him, even if he is part of the opposition, he will also get mad if the same thing will be done to President Bongbong Marcos.

Amid the criticisms against him and the accusations that he is allegedly “pro-China”, the Senator issued a warning for people who are supposedly trying to pick a fight with China. He stressed that the Chinese government might not be able to take it anymore and would decide to enter the Philippines.

“Ang mga bata po ngayon, sad to say, huwag kayong magagalit sakin, nako maraming batang magagalit siguro pero pasensya na kayo, you are weak. Hindi kayo katulad nung panahon namin na hindi kami iyakin. Natuto kami, natuto kami sa kalsada, natuto kami na huwag umupo, umiyak,”
