Food Vlogger in Palawan Loses Her Life After Eating Toxic “Devil Crab”
A 51-year-old food vlogger lost her life after reportedly eating a toxic type of crab known as the devil crab in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
The victim identified as Emma Amit, was known for sharing food and cooking videos online.
On February 4, Emma was able to record a video of herself cooking and eating various seafood she had gathered. She prepared the crabs in coconut milk and even showed how much she enjoyed the meal.
Neighbors noticed her condition worsening as she reportedly experienced convulsions. She was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save her. She passed away on February 6, 2026.
Authorities later explained that Emma may have eaten a type of crustacean that carries dangerous neurotoxins. The devil crab, also known as toxic reef crab, contains poison that does not disappear even when cooked or boiled.
In different parts of the Philippines, this crab is known by various local names such as kuret, liod, kaligmata, kagang-bugton, and karal-karal.
The devil crab closely resembles edible crabs, making it easy to mistake. Reports said Emma even ate more rice because she found the dish delicious, unaware that the crab she consumed was highly poisonous.
Local officials have reminded residents to be very careful when gathering, cooking, or eating seafood, especially if they are unsure of the type. They stressed the importance of proper knowledge and caution to prevent similar tragedies.
